Men's Tennis Wins Third Straight

Wichita, Kan. - The Nebraska men's tennis team won its third straight match on Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over Wichita State in Wichita, Kan., in the team's final non-conference match this year. The three-match win streak is the Huskers' longest this season, and they even up their record to 9-9 heading into their Big 12 opener next week against Oklahoma State.

"Our guys played pretty well," NU Head Coach Kerry McDermott said. "I felt it was a tough match as far as the crowd goes. They were kind of rowdy, but our guys played through it. We played a solid match, we performed like we should and we're confident heading into the Big 12 season."

Once again, Nebraska's fate in the teams outcome lied in the outcome of the doubles matches. Going into the match, the Huskers were 6-0 when they won the doubles point and 0-8 when they lost it (they didn't play doubles in three matches). The Huskers made sure they took home the doubles point in this match, winning both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles by a score 8-4. Wichita State won at No. 2 doubles 9-7, but it was not enough to prevent Nebraska from taking a 1-0 lead into singles play.

The Shockers quickly answered in singles play, tying it at 1-1 after Matt Teivans defeated NU's Karl Jones at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Calin Paar won his fifth straight singles match with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles to make it 2-1 Nebraska. The Shockers answered once again with a win at No. 3 singles to make it 2-2. Nebraska put the match away with three straight wins to close the scoring on the day, including David Bendheim's win over No. 103 Tiago Espirito Santo at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Huskers open up Big 12 play next weekend with their first home match in nearly a month against Oklahoma State on April 4, then host No. 5 Texas the next day in Lincoln.
