Johnson City, Tenn. - The Nebraska men's tennis team
fell to the No. 42 East Tennessee State Buccaneers 4-1 on Saturday
morning in Johnson City, Tenn. The Huskers couldn't recover after
losing the doubles point, and fell to 6-9 overall this season. ETSU
improved to 13-3 with the win.
Nebraska dropped all three doubles matches to start the match, which
was moved to ETSU's indoor facility due to inclement weather in the
area. The No. 58 duo of Enrique Olivares and Sebastian Serrano defeated
NU's Calin Paar and Francois Van Impe, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles. Paar and
Van Impe, paired up for the first time all season in doubles play, drew
a tough team to play in their first match together. The Buccaneers also
won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
East Tennessee State clinched the match early, winning three of the
first four completed singles matches to take a 4-1 lead. Each match was
competitive, but the Buccaneers were able to win all three in straight
sets. NU got on the board at No. 2 singles as Paar earned his ninth
singles win of the season, including his fourth in his last five
matches, with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over Predrag Burmazovic. The
remaining two singles matches weren't finished since the team's
outcomes had already been decided.
"They're a solid team," said head coach Kerry McDermott. "We had some positives, but we need to continue to keep improving."
The Huskers will play later today against South Carolina Upstate in
Johnson City. First serve for the match against the Spartans is set for
4 p.m. central time.
