Huskers Win Seventh Straight

Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team won its seventh straight match to start the season on Saturday morning, as they swept the Central Oklahoma Bronchos 7-0. The 7-0 victory gives the Huskers a team-record seven consecutive shutouts. The Huskers moved an astounding 61-0 in singles and doubles matches this season with the sweep, and had arguably their most dominant performance of the season on the day.

"The thing that helps us most is our confidence level," Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. "You just go play one match at a time, you don't have control over the results. I think every individual on our team's confidence level has got to be extremely high."

Jacobson shuffled the lineups around to begin the day at doubles, giving juniors Marianne Cicmanec and Ashley Finnegan their first action of the season at the No. 3 spot. The duo didn't disappoint, controlling the match the whole way through on their way to an 8-3 victory. Maria Ring and Wiveca Swarting played at No. 1 doubles for the first time this season, where they posted their third 8-0 victory in the last four matches. Freshmen Amber Chandronnait and Stephanie Evans also had no problems at No. 2 doubles, where they played for the first time this season, winning 8-2.

The Huskers continued their outstanding play in singles. Freshman Jana Albers swept her opponent at No. 2 singles, and Swarting did the same at No. 3. Senior Imke Reimers won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, marking the sixth time in seven matches this season where she has surrendered one game or less to her opponent. Chandronnait, Evans and freshman Abby Buxton filled out the bottom half of the Husker lineup, and all three won in straight sets.

Nebraska hits the road for the first time this season next Friday, as they travel to Ames, Iowa, to take on Iowa State. The match also will be NU's first Big 12 opponent of the season.

"I think we're ready," said Jacobson about the road match. "Our greatest challenges are directly in front of us, and we're going to have seven or eight opportunities against nationally-ranked opponents to compete against."

The Huskers return to Lincoln for a match against Southeast Missouri State next Sunday, the first of another homestand for NU, this time a five-match one that stretches to March 14.
