Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team remains undefeated on the year after a 7-0 sweep of the Wyoming Cowgirls on Sunday at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers move to 5-0 with the victory, while the Cowgirls fall to
3-3. The Huskers are off to one of their best starts in team history with their fifth consecutive sweep to open the season.
"It was a great day for the Huskers," NU Assistant Coach Hayden Perez said. "We found ourselves tested at a few positions, but the girls responded well to the challenge and they really focused when needed."
Nebraska had little trouble with the doubles matches, with two 8-1 victories (Nos. 2 and 3) and an 8-3 victory (No. 1), and NU took a 1-0 lead.
Senior Imke Reimers wasted little time in earning the second point for the Huskers, as she posted her second sweep of the season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Wyoming's Corina Lazar. Freshmen Stephanie Evans and Amber Chandronnait were close behind, each winning 6-0, 6-2, giving the Huskers their fourth point and clinching the match.
Jana Albers won at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3, followed by a 6-2, 7-5 victory by Wiveca Swarting at No. 2 singles. At No. 6 singles, Maria Ring battled back after losing the first set to notch a 4-6, 6-1, (10-2) victory, completing the 7-0 Nebraska sweep.
"This team is playing well as a whole right now," said Perez. "We have nine very committed team members and they push each other to be their best every day. It is showing up on match days and that is a great thing for the Huskers."
The Huskers will try to extend their historic start to the season next weekend with two more home matches, on Friday, Feb. 15 against Saint Louis and the next day against Central Oklahoma.
