Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team defeated the Creighton Bluejays 7-0 on Friday in its season opener at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The sweep marked the second straight year and third time in the last four years that the Huskers have begun their season with a sweep of the Bluejays.
“It's a great start for our first dual match of the season," Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. "I think overall we did a really good job of playing with a high level of confidence. I think that was probably the thing I was most impressed with."
The Bluejays were shorthanded on the day, as only five players were able to make the trip to Lincoln. As a result, they were forced to concede No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles to the Huskers. The doubles team of senior Imke Reimers and freshman Jana Albers, both natives of Papenburg, Germany, and the No. 42 ranked doubles team in the nation, won 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Wiveca Swarting and junior Maria Ring had similar success, as they also won 8-2.
Jacobson filled three of the five spots in the singles lineup with freshmen, as Albers played at No. 2, Stephanie Evans at No. 4 and Amber Chandronnait at No. 5. All three freshmen won their matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-0 sweep by Chandronnait.
"When we recruited our freshman class, we really felt they were capable of stepping in and competing right away and they did that today," said Jacobson. "I'm sure that they're just going to grow stronger as the season goes along."
Reimers took care of Creighton's Lindsey Erickson at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Swarting swept her match at No. 3 singles against Sarah Cadwallader, 6-0, 6-0.
The Huskers hit the courts again next weekend, as they play Illinois State on Friday, Feb. 1, and Colorado State on Sunday, Feb. 3. Both matches will be played at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
