The Nebraska men’s tennis team travels to Austin, Texas, this weekend to play in the University of Texas Fall Invite. The tournament will feature teams from the Big 12 as well as several teams from the state of Texas.
For the first time this fall, every player on the Husker roster will be traveling to Austin, including senior Karl Jones, who was sidelined over the summer and for part of the fall after his appendix burst before he was able to get in for an appendectomy. Head coach Kerry McDermott said that Jones will make the trip and won’t play singles but could potentially play doubles with freshman Jamie Holmes.
"We’ve got him in doubles to get him going again, and test him out a little bit," McDermott said. "Hopefully he’ll be able to play, but that’s a big question mark right now."
The rest of the team will participate in singles, and the same doubles teams will be used as last week’s tournament in Tulsa, including Taylor Boney/Mark Tate, David Bendheim/Renato Melo and Hendrik Stahmer/Francois Van Impe.
"It will be a great opportunity for our team to play some ranked individuals in both singles and doubles," said McDermott. "Also, this will be a good test for us to see where we are as a team right now within the Big 12, and to see how some of the other Big 12 teams are looking. I am excited that we can finish the fall season with such a high level tournament."
The tournament will be Nebraska’s last of the fall season. The spring season starts on Jan. 19 as the Huskers host Creighton and Air Force on the same day.
