Chandronnait Advances at ITA Central Regional Tournament

Tulsa, Okla. - Nebraska freshman Amber Chandronnait, of the women's tennis team, advanced from Qualifying Singles to Open Singles at the ITA Central Regional Tournament in Tulsa, Okla., on Wednesday. Chandronnait joins fellow Huskers Imke Reimers and Wiveca Swarting in Open Singles which begins play today.

Chandronnait was one of five Huskers playing in the Qualifying Singles portion of the tournament, joining freshmen Jana Albers, Abby Buxton and Stephanie Evans and junior Maria Ring. 64 players total were apart of Qualifying Singles, with 16 advancing to Open Singles, where they would join 48 pre-qualified players for a final round of 64.

In the first round of play, Albers, who drew the No. 16 seed in Qualifying Singles, was upset in a third-set tiebreaker by Tulsa's Marta Marcinkowska, 6-3, 1-6, (10-8). Buxton was defeated by Kansas State's Antea Huljev, 6-3, 6-3, Evans lost to Maria Kalashnikova of Oklahoma, 6-3, 6-2, and Ring fell to Montana State's Laura Villegas, 7-6, 6-4.

Chandronnait took care of her first-round opponent, Missouri's Raquel Wagner, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. She moved on to the round of 32 where she upset the No. 3-seed Torrie Browning of Wichita State, again in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.

With her two wins, Chandronnait was one of 16 Qualifying Singles players to advance to Open Singles. She, along with Swarting and the No. 3-seeded Reimers, gives the Huskers three players in the 64-player bracket. First round play begins today.

Open Doubles play also begins today. The Huskers have two teams in the field of 64, Chandronnait/Evans and Ring/Swarting.
