Nebraska senior Brady Schnell continues to enjoy one of the most impressive seasons in Nebraska men's golf history. Fresh off a third-place finish in last week's Big 12 Championships, Schnell received two additional honors this week.
Schnell was one of 10 golfers to earn All-Big 12 honors earlier this week. He was one of just two golfers from North Division schools to earn the honor, joining Kansas' Gary Woodland. Schnell is also the first Husker to earn all-conference honors since seniors Scott Gutschewski, Jamie Rogers and Steve Friesen all earned first-team honors in 1999.
The Millard West graduate clinched a spot on the team with an outstanding performance at the Big 12 Championships at Prairie Dunes Golf Club in Hutchinson, Kan. Schnell had a rough start to the tournament, with a six-over total through four holes, but after that point he was the best golfer in the field, playing his final 51 holes in one-under par. Schnell rallied for a first-round 72, then posted rounds of 71 and 72 to complete the 54-hole championship at five-over par, four strokes behind individual champion Pablo Martin of Oklahoma State.
Schnell received an elite honor earlier this week, when he was extended a sponsor's exemption for the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic. The event will be held at the Tournament Players Club Deere Run in Silvis, Ill., from July 12-15. chnell was one of three individuals granted a sponsor's exemption for the event, joining Oklahoma State sophomore Jonathan Moore and UCLA-bound 18-year old Phillip Francis, who captured the 2006 U.S. Junior.
Schnell's exemption to the John Deere Classic was based not only on his outstanding senior season with the Huskers, but also an impressive run in the summer of 2006. Schnell captured the prestigious North/South Amateur last summer at Pinehurst, and also dominated the 2006 Nebraska Amateur at Elkhorn's Indian Creek Golf Course.
The strong play by Schnell this spring has paced Nebraska to a near-certain invitation to the NCAA Central Regional Championships. The official regional announcement will be made on Monday evening. The event will be held at Rich Harvest Farms in the Chicago area, site of Schnell's 2003 victory in the Western Amateur. Schnell enters the NCAA Regional competition with a team-leading 72.41 stroke average.
