Kansas City, Mo. - The Nebraska women's tennis team lost to No. 15 Baylor on Friday, 4-0, at the Big 12 Championships in Kansas City, Mo. The Huskers missed their chance to advance to the semifinals for the second consecutive year with the loss, and dropped to 13-9 on the season. After sweeping Missouri 4-0 Thursday, the Huskers were unable to find a rhythm and couldn't get a match victory over the No. 1-seed Bears.
The Bears opened doubles play by quickly winning two doubles matches and taking the doubles point. Zuzana Zemenova and Iva Mihaylova defeated NU's Marianne Cicmanec and Ashley Finnegan, 8-0, in the No. 3 doubles spot, and Zuzana Cerna and Lenka Broosova beat Imke Reimers and Diana Kuhl, 8-2, at the No. 1 spot. The No. 2 spot was stopped after the Bears took the first two decided matches and the doubles point. The Huskers found themselves in a 1-0 hole early.
NU wasn't able to get back on track in the singles matches. At the No. 6 position, Finnegan lost to Mihaylova, 6-1, 6-2, to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. Shortly after, Klara Zrustova beat Cicmanec at the No. 5 position, 6-0, 6-1, to give the Bears their third point on the day. At the No. 3 spot, BU's Broosova beat Wiveca Swarting, 6-3, 6-2, giving the Bears their fourth point and clinching the victory.
The Huskers will have to wait on the announcements for the at-large bids to the NCAA Regionals to see if they will be able to earn their unprecedented third straight NCAA berth. The Huskers missed out on the chance for an automatic bid, which is given to the winner of the conference championships.
If the Huskers are left out, they still have enjoyed a very successful season. Head coach Scott Jacobson earned his 200th victory earlier this season, and he led the team to its 11th straight winning season.
