Austin, Texas ? The No. 67 Nebraska men’s tennis team dropped a match to No. 12 Texas, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Penick-AllisonTennisCenter. The loss moved NU to 9-10 on the year and 2-4 in the Big 12 Conference and concludes the Huskers’ regular season.
The Huskers were swept in doubles play, with Texas’ 28th-ranked tandem of Dimitar Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala defeating NU seniors James Clow and Adrian Szatmary at the No. 1 spot, 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, the freshmen duo of David Bendheim and Francois Van Impe fell to UT’s Miguel Reyes Varel and Jon Wiegand, 8-2, while sophomore Renato Melo and junior Mark Tate were defeated by Bernhard Deussner and Luis Diaz Barriga, 8-3, at No. 3 doubles.
Earning points in the singles competition for the Huskers were freshmen standouts Bendheim and Van Impe. Competing at the No. 2 spot, Bendheim earned a victory when UT’s Reyes Varel retired after being defeated by Bendheim, 6-1, in the first set.
Following a strong performance during Friday’s competition against Texas A&M, Van Impe again stepped up to earn a victory for the Huskers at the No. 6 slot. Matched up against the Longhorns’ Rook Schellenberg, Van Impe wasted no time as he defeated Schellenberg in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
The Huskers now look ahead to prepare for next week’s Big 12 Tennis Championships which will be held in Kansas City, Mo. The men’s competition is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 27 and will continue through Sunday, April 29.
