Huskers Finish In Fifth at USF Invitational

The Nebraska men’s golf team posted a team score of 294 on Sunday to bring the team's 3-day total to 886 (299-293-294) and post a fifth-place finish in a field of 17 at the Ron Smith/USF Invitational at the par-72, 7,014-yard Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Tampa, Fla.

 

After an opening round of 299, Nebraska sat in a tie for fifth with Marquette, but NU used a balanced team effort on Saturday to move up the standings and sit in a tie for second through two rounds. Four Huskers posted rounds of 75 or better on Saturday, including even-par rounds of 72 by seniors Brady Schnell and Ty Capps on the 7,014-yard layout.

 

Through the first two rounds, the Huskers’ total of 592 leaves had the team in a three-way tie with Jacksonville State and Troy for second place.

 

Nebraska’s senior and Brady Schnell and Ryan Lenahan led the squad with final scores of 221. Schnell (76-72-73) shot a final round of 73, while Lenahan (73-74-74) wrapped up the tournament with a 74, each earning a tietravel for 17th individually.

 

Senior Ty Capps filled the third spot for the Huskers. Capps shot a final round of 74, bringing his three-day total to 222 (76-72-74) and placing in a tie for 20th. Capps additionally finished in a tie for third in the tournament in par-four scoring with just one-over par.

 

Freshman Jamie Marshall continued to establish his college golf game with a 223 total (75-75-73) through three days, closing the tournament with a final round of one-over par 73. Marshall finished in a tie for 24th and also placed in a tie for fifth in the tournament in par-five scoring with a five-under par average of 4.58.

 

Senior Drew Reynolds rounded out the team with a final score of 233 (75-81-77), leaving him in a tie for 65th.

 

As a team, the Huskers placed third in the tournament with two eagles and and tied for sixth in birdies with 37 and in par scoring with 160 and additionally finished in third in par-four scoring at 33-over and an average of 4.22.

 

The Huskers will next travel to Aiken, South Carolina on March 12-13 for the South Carolina-Aiken tournament, their third competition this spring.
