Huskers Top Cyclones

Ames, Iowa - The No. 75 Nebraska women's tennis team earned its second Big 12 victory of the season on Saturday after it defeated the Iowa State Cyclones, 6-1, in Ames, Iowa. The Huskers moved to 9-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

The Huskers started off strong, taking two of the three doubles points, including an 8-0 sweep by NU's Maria Ring and Wiveca Swarting over Iowa State's Jill Palen and Caitlin Loprinzi. The win was Ring and Swarting's fifth in a row in doubles. Imke Reimers and Diana Kuhl also won their doubles match easily, defeating Eve Soriano and Kara Hickey, 8-2.

The Huskers fared well in the singles matches, although most of the matches were tightly contested. The one exception was Reimers, who is ranked No. 50 nationally in singles play. She easily defeated Jill Palen of ISU, 6-1, 6-0, narrowly missing shutting out her opponent for the second time this season. Reimers shut out UC Riverside's Erynne Oki, 6-0, 6-0, earlier this season. It was Reimers' sixth straight singles win; her last loss came nearly a month ago, on March 2, in three sets to Baylor's Zuzana Cerna, who is ranked just ahead of Reimers at No. 49 nationally.

Marianne Cicmanec and Ashley Finnegan both came away with narrow three-set victories, as they both won a third-set super tiebreaker after splitting the first two with their opponents. Alyssa Palen of Iowa State gave the Cyclones their lone point on the day with a three-set victory over NU's Ring, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Kuhl won her fourth straight singles match, defeating ISU's Hickey in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 2 position, while Swarting picked up her third consecutive victory with a win over Loprinzi, 6-3, 7-6 (4).

The win gave the Huskers their first road Big 12 victory, and second road win this season overall. With the loss, the Cyclones dropped to 5-6, including 0-5 in Big 12 play.

The Huskers play next against Oklahoma, as the first match in NU's final three-match homestand, marking the last home matches for the Huskers this season.
