Lincoln ? The eighth-ranked Nebraska women’s gymnastics team posted a score of 196.40 to capture its 13th consecutive Masters Classic team title in front of 1,077 fans Sunday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Huskers, who upset third-ranked Stanford (195.80) and also defeated No. 21 NC State (194.475), scored a 49.0 or better on vault, beam and floor. Nebraska improves to 13-3 on the season.
Junior Emily Parsons captured four individual event titles, finishing first on vault (9.925), beam (9.875), floor (9.95) and the all-around (39.25). Woo tied with Parsons for the beam crown ? her second of the year ? while sophomore Kylie Stone posted a 39.15 to tie for second-place honors in the all-around with Stanford’s Carly Janiga.
“We had four all-arounders going again today, and they all did well,” head coach Dan Kendig said. “It was good to see Emily win the all-around title, even though she had a little trouble on bars. When Emily is confident, there is nothing that can get in her way ? especially with her power on floor and vault. We’re enjoying watching her compete each and every week.”
Nebraska opened the meet on vault, where Parsons set the pace with a score of 9.95 to take her first event title. Senior Michele Zabawa took third-place honors with a 9.875, while Stone, senior Stephanie Carter and junior Desire’ Sniatynski posted matching marks of 9.825 to land in a four-way tie for fifth, NU finished with an event score of 49.225, and after one rotation, the Huskers stood in first place with a solid lead over NC State (48.725) and Stanford (48.275).
NU then moved on to bars and was led by Sniatynski and junior Brittney Williams’ third-place scores of 9.875. Stone and Zabawa finished in a tie for eighth with their marks of 9.80, while Parsons earned a 9.50 to give Nebraska a rotation total of 48.85 and top standing (98.075) ahead of the Cardinal (97.425) and Wolfpack (96.85) at the halfway point.
The Huskers continued on to the third rotation on beam, where Parsons and sophomore Tricia Woo were the team’s event leaders with a pair of 9.875 scores that secured them a share of the individual crown. Freshman Maria Scaffidi’sperformance earned her a third-place 9.80, while freshman Kathryn Howard scored a 9.775 for fifth. Stone notched a 9.675 to finish 10th, and NU finished beam with a 49.00, a running score of 147.075 and first-place standing over Stanford (146.475) and NC State (145.90).
Nebraska capped the afternoon on floor, and Parsons walked away with her third event title with a 9.95. Sniatynski and Stone tallied scores of 9.85 each to place fourth, while Woo followed up with a 9.825 for eighth. Carter added a 9.80 for 10th place, and the Huskers finished the rotation with a 49.275 event score and a 196.40 final team score to claim the Masters Classic team title.
“I was very pleased with our beam lineup today,” Kendig said. “We finished with two very good routines from Tricia and Emily, and any time you finish with a 49.0 or better, you’re all right. I think this team is a bit tired from a rigorous travel schedule, and it’s a long season, competing every weekend. We’re going to recover a little bit each week, and we have a great meet coming up with Utah next weekend that will have this team raring to go.”
Nebraska continues its home stretch by playing host to No. 5 Utah next Sunday, March 4 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Competition is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
