White Leads Huskers at Central District

Parrish, Fla. - Freshman Kate White fired rounds of 77 and 72 to sit in a tie for ninth place after the opening 36 holes of the Central District Invitational at the River Wilderness Golf Club on Monday.

Despite a pair of strong rounds from White, the Huskers struggled on the first day of the 14-team tournament that featured 12 teams ranked among the top 50 in the nation. Nebraska opened with a 320 over the opening 18 holes, before managing a 316 in the second round to sit in 14th place at 636.

In a day when the Huskers adjusted to getting back to playing competitive golf after being relegated to practicing indoors during the spring, White sizzled against some of the nation's best golfers. White's second-round 72 was one of just 10 rounds played at or below par by the 73 individuals in the tournament field.

She enters the final round at 149, nine strokes back of individual leader Ashley Knoll from Texas A&M. Knoll scorched the 6,099-yard, par-72 layout at the River Wilderness Golf Club for a five-under-par 67 in the opening round, before shooting a 73 over her next 18 holes.

Knoll owns a one-stroke lead over Michigan State's Sara Brown, who put together impressive rounds of 71 and 70 for the host Spartans. Texas A&M leads the team race by six strokes (291-296-587) over Michigan State (296-297-593). Texas is 20 strokes off the pace set by A&M at 607.

While White played well, the rest of the Huskers struggled in their opening rounds of the spring. Junior Elli Brown settled for an 82 in the first round before bouncing back with a solid 76 in the second round to close the day at 156 in a tie for 53rd.

No other Husker mustered a score better than 80 on the day, as freshman JC Stevenson carded an 80 in the opening round before managing an 84 over the next 18 holes to close the first day of competition in a tie for 65th at 164. Allison Stewart (81-85-166) and Chrissie McArdle (85-84-169) were right behind Stevenson in the individual standings.

The 54-hole tournament concludes Tuesday with the third round beginning at 7 a.m.
