Lincoln, Neb - University of Nebraska women's tennis team fell to the Wichita State Shockers on Sunday, 6-1. With the loss, the Huskers dropped to 2-1 on the season, just missing the chance to start the season 3-0 for the seventh consecutive year.
Wichita State, coming off a 7-0 sweep of Wyoming on Saturday, carried their momentum from their last match into this one. The Shockers began the day by sweeping the doubles matches and taking the doubles point. Senior Madina Rakhim and freshman Florentina Hanisch of Wichita State gave Huskers Imke Reimers and Maria Ring, who were ranked sixth in the regional doubles rankings, their first setback of the season, 8-6, in the No. 1 doubles spot. In the No. 2 doubles spot, freshmen Wiveca Swarting and Diana Kuhl gave Wichita State's Stephanie Dalmacio and Anna Egorova, ranked No. 9 in the regional doubles rankings, all they could handle, but ultimately fell short, 8-6.
Reimers, ranked 30th nationally, accounted for the lone point for the Huskers by winning her singles match at the No. 1 spot against Rakhim, who at one point in her career was ranked as high as 47th nationally, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). After Wichita State swept the singles matches at the Nos. 4-6 positions in straight sets, they had four points and the game was effectively decided. The Nos. 1-3 singles matches all went into third sets, where instead of playing a standard set, they played a super-tiebreaker to 10 points, as the match had already been decided. Kuhl, playing in the No. 2 singles spot, lost 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4), and Swarting, playing in the No. 3 spot, lost 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9). The Shockers improved to 2-0 on the season.
Nebraska will be in action again next week against Drake on Friday, Feb. 2, and then again on Sunday, Feb. 4, against Colorado State. Both games will be at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
