Lincoln, Neb.?University of Nebraska women’s tennis head coach Scott Jacobson earned his 200th career victory on Friday, as his team beat the Wyoming Cowgirls 6-1 at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
“It’s just like any other win,” said Jacobson. “I’m proud of our kids. They came out and persevered, and they performed well in some critical pressure situations.”
One such pressure situation involved a doubles match between freshmen Diana Kuhl and Wiveca Swarting of Nebraska against junior Corina Lazar and freshman Sarah Summerfield of Wyoming. Down 8-7, the Husker freshmen duo battled back to force a tiebreak, which they would ultimately win. That match proved to be the deciding factor for the Huskers in taking the doubles point, as they ended up 2-1 in doubles play.
“I was real proud of Diana and Wiveca today,” Jacobson said. “They showed great composure out there, especially for freshmen.”
Kuhl had another battle on her hand in her singles match against Lazar. Up 6-5, Kuhl was a point away from taking the set. However, Lazar fought back a set point, and ended up forcing and then winning the tiebreaker. Kuhl was down 3-2 in the second set before having to retire due to injury, the Husker’s lone loss on the day.
Husker junior Imke Reimers, ranked No. 30 nationally, had no problem in defeating Wyoming’s Summerfield in their singles match, 6-0, 6-1.
Jacobson, who also celebrated his birthday on Friday, was pleased with his team’s effort and character on the court.
“One of the things I stress to the girls is having positive body language 100% of the time. I want them to maintain a consistent and constant demeanor on the court.”
Nebraska improves to 2-0 with the win, and Wyoming drops to 0-1. The Huskers take on Wichita State on 10 a.m. Sunday at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
