Columbia, Mo. ? Junior Desire’ Sniatynski captured the first all-around crown of her career Friday night to lead the No. 7 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team to a (196.80-195.00) win at No. 22 Missouri at the Hearnes Center. The Huskers, who improved to 6-1 on the season, scored a 49.0 or better on all four events and swept the individual event awards. NU also scored its highest team total since a 196.85 at Oklahoma on Feb. 4, 2006.
Sniatynski claimed the all-around title with a career-high 39.375 and a share of the bars title (9.90) with sophomore Vanessa Meloche. Sniatysnki, a native of Kenosha, Wis., notched a career best on vault (9.825) to tie for fourth-place honors, as well as strong marks of 9.825 on beam and floor, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. Junior Emily Parsons had a stellar night on her three events as well, taking first-place finishes on vault (9.95), beam (9.95) and floor (9.925). Sophomore Kylie Stone also earned her highest all-around score of the year with a 39.225 to finish second behind Sniatynski.
“Desire’ had a tough week with some soreness affecting her warm-ups, but she went out and rocked every event tonight,” head coach Dan Kendig said. Her work ethic day in and day out is amazing, and it pays off in competition.
“Emily also had a tremendous night tonight on three events. She just keeps on keeping on. She is exciting to watch, confident in her abilities and knows how to go out and hit and perform. I know she wants to get back into the bars lineup this season, but the performances she gives us on vault, beam and floor are helping our team in a huge way.”
Nebraska opened the meet on bars, where Meloche and Sniatynski set the pace with matching scores of 9.90 to tie for first-place honors. Junior Brittney Williams posted a 9.80 to finish fifth, and Stone followed up with a 9.725 to place seventh. Freshman Maria Scaffidi added a 9.675 to bring NU to an event score of 49.0, just ahead of Missouri’s first-rotation vault total of 48.95.
The Huskers then moved on to the vault and were led by Parsons’ first-place 9.95. Senior Stephanie Carter earned a season-high 9.90 to finish third, and Sniatynski, Stone and Scaffidi landed in a three-way tie for fourth with their best marks of 2007 with matching marks of 9.825. Nebraska finished the rotation with a season-best 49.325 vault total and a running score of 98.325 to take strong lead over the Tigers (97.675) at the halfway point.
NU continued to the third rotation on floor, where Parsons was again the team’s event leader with a 9.925 that secured her the event title. Stone’s performance earned her a season-high 9.875 for third, and sophomore Tricia Woo placed just behind in fourth with a 9.85. Sniatynski took sixth place with a season best of 9.825, while Carter added a 9.80, and Scaffidi notched a season-high 9.775. The Huskers finished the rotation with a season-high 49.275, a running score of 147.60 and a solid lead over MU (146.15).
Nebraska capped the evening on beam, and Parsons walked away with her third event title of the night with a career-high 9.95. Freshman Kathryn Howard took second place with an outstanding 9.875 to set a season high, and Sniatynski followed up with a 9.825 for fourth. Stone added a 9.80 to place fifth, while Woo scored a 9.75 to bring NU to an event score of 49.20 and a 196.80-195.00 win over the Tigers.
“I am really proud of this team tonight,” Kendigsaid. “I’m proud of the way they have responded to everything we have presented to them this year. They just keep believing in each other and in what we’re doing. That’s a very strong bond, and it’s only going to carry us to greater heights as the year goes on.
“We are strong in every event. If someone misses a routine, it doesn’t affect the rest of the lineup, and that is the making of a veteran team. This group has worked hard, and I see them being one of the top teams in the country again by the end of the year.”
Nebraska returns home for its home opener on Friday, Feb. 2 with No. 8 Oklahoma at 7:30 p.m at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The competition also features a dual between the Nebraska and Oklahoma men’s teams, and fans will enjoy Dollar Days promotions at the Devaney Center, with $1 admission, hot dogs and Pepsi products.
