Lincoln, Neb?The Nebraska women’s tennis team started its season with a bang on Wednesday, defeating Creighton 7-0. The victory marks the 21st straight victory for the Huskers over the Bluejays, which is currently NU's longest win streak over any opponent.
Nebraska started off by sweeping the doubles matches before starting its singles matches, including a win by NU junior Imke Reimers and sophomore Maria Ring, ranked No. 6 in the regional doubles rankings, over CU senior Katie Chiu and freshman Tess Reddin, 8-4.
Reimers, ranked No. 30 nationally according to ITA singles rankings, carried the momentum from her doubles match into her singles match against Chiu, defeating her 6-1, 6-1. Reimers seemed to be in mid-season form on her first match after posting an 11-3 record during the fall season.
The Huskers didn’t lose a set on the day, sweeping all of their matches. Head coach Scott Jacobson was pleased with the results on the day.
“I was really impressed with our confidence,” Jacobson said. “We competed really hard, and were striking the ball well in pressure situations.”
With the win, Jacobson earned his 199th career victory. He has a chance to achieve his 200th win on Friday, with a dual against Wyoming.
“It was a good team effort, and a great way to start the season,” said Jacobson.
Nebraska will take on two more opponents before the week is over, against Wyoming on Friday and WichitaState on Sunday. Both matches will be held at the Nebraska Tennis Center, located about one mile north of 70th and Cornhusker Highway, in the Abbott Sports Complex.
