Colorado Springs, Colo.-The Nebraska rifle team finished its fall campaign with a first-place finish at the Air Force Invitational on Thursday, Nov. 30. The Huskers shot a season-high score of 4,661, defeating both Texas Christian University (4,616) and Air Force (4,546). The Huskers dominated in both smallbore (2,326) and air rifle (2,346) in the one-day competition held at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
"This [4,661] is the highest we have shot so far this year," Nebraska Coach Launi Meili said. "I am happy we did so well. We are going to practice hard to maintain and improve on that level of competition."
Senior Stacy Underwood placed first in the air rifle competition, shooting a career-best 594. She also placed second in smallbore with a score of 582. Senior Kristina Fehlings topped the smallbore competition with a score of 586. Fehlings placed second in air rifle with a 589. Junior Kirsten Weiss tied for third in both air rifle (585) and smallbore (577).
The Nebraska shooters remained in Colorado Springs to compete in the Pan-Am Tryouts on Dec. 1-3. The top-two air rifle and smallbore competitors at the tryouts were chosen to compete on the world team. Although none of Huskers were able to earn spots on the world team, Meili was still proud of her athletes.
"We worked so hard on Thursday, so it was tough to compete at that same level for the entire weekend," Launi said. "It was good to get a taste of what world competition is like and to know how close we are to shooting at that level."
With the first half of their season nearly behind them, the 5-3 Huskers will have nearly two months to train for the spring season, which begins Feb. 10 with a match against Memphis.
