Lincoln-The Nebraska rifle team soared to a victory over West Virginia University, 4,633-4,548, on Saturday, Nov. 11, after falling short to Kentucky, 4,631-4,652, on Friday.
The two-day competition, held at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., left Nebraska with a 3-3 record on the season.
"We really didn’t shoot well against Kentucky this weekend," Nebraska Coach Launi Meili said. "We’re going to change our training perspective a little bit. Now we’re going to focus more on match demands and try to put the perspective on what it takes to be a champion."
Junior Kirsten Weiss placed third for the Huskers in smallbore against Kentucky with a score of 577, while senior Stacy Underwood placed second in air rifle with a score of 588. NU fell to the unbeaten Wildcats in both smallbore and air rifle.
The Huskers made a drastic turn on Saturday, defeating West Virginia in both smallbore and air rifle. Individually, NU made top-three sweep in the air rifle competition as junior Kim Chrostowski placed first with a score of 589. Underwood placed second with a 588, while Weiss shot a 582 for third place.
Weiss also led the smallbore competition, placing first with a score of 580. Junior Katie Harrington rounded out the top-three with a score of 577.
The Huskers have a three-week break before traveling to Colorado Springs to shoot against Texas Christian University and Air Force on Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
