Schnell's Title Powers NU to Second-Place Finish

Las Cruces, N.M. - Senior Brady Schnell’s season-low individual score of 206 (67-70-69) was enough to win the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate and propel the Huskers to a season-best second-place finish Tuesday at the par-72, 7,074-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

 

The Huskers finished with a total score of 861 (290-291-280), marking their lowest team total since the Ron Moore Invitational on March 20-21, 2005. The second-place finish marks the Husker’s third top-five finish of the fall season and its second top-three finish.

 

Schnell's 206 total was 10 strokes under par and two strokes ahead of second place, while it also included a season-low first-round score of 67, while his second-round 70 matched his previous season low and his third-round 69 would have also bettered the season low.

 

Schnell led the tournament in par-four scoring with a two-under par 3.93 as well as in par-five scoring with a 10-under par 4.17. Schnell additionally tied for second in the tournament in birdies with 15.

 

Seniors Ty Capps (74-74-69) and Drew Reynolds (77-71-69) each closed the tournament with a season-low round of 69, finishing with a total of 217 and moving the duo from a tie in 18th through the first round to a tie for 13 to close the tournament.

 

Capps tied for second in the tournament in par-four scoring with a one-under par 3.97, while Reynolds and Capps also tied for third in the tournament in pars with 35. Reynolds additionally tied for third in the tournament in par-three scoring, finishing with a one-over par 3.08, while also leading the tournament in eagles with two.

 

Freshman Jamie Marshall Marshall was fourth in the Husker lineup with a 227 (74-76-77), placing him in a tie for 40th. Marshall additionally tied for third in the tournament in par-scoring with 35, while his total score marks a season and career-low, bettering his previous low of 233 at the Memphis Intercollegiate. His first-round score of 74 also marked a season and career-low, bettering his previous low of 77 at the Memphis Intercollegiate by three strokes.

 

Senior Ryan Lenahan rounded out the Husker lineup with a 228 (75-80-73), placing him in a tie for 45th.  

 

As a team, the Huskers led the tournament in even-pars with 165 and tied for second in the tournament in eagles with three. Nebraska also placed second in the tournament in par-four scoring, finishing at 21-over par 4.14 and placed third in par-five scoring with a 23-under par average of 4.62.

 

This tournament marks the end of the fall season for Nebraska. The team will resume play with the spring schedule in February of 2007.
