Huskers Fall Short in Alaska Shootout

Senior Kristina Fehlings tied a career-best air rifle score as Nebraska fell to Alaska-Fairbanks, 4,655-4,674.  The match, held at the E.F. Horton Range in Fairbanks, Alaska, puts Nebraska at 2-2 on the season.

The 2006 defending National Champion Alaska-Fairbanks team has won seven NCAA titles in the past eight years.

"We slightly improved our performance from yesterday," Nebraska Head Coach Launi Meili said.  "We had breakthrough performances with Kristina and Kim in air rifle.  However, the scores were still not quite enough to beat Alaska. We also have a lot of work to do in smallbore."

Nebraska began to trail the Nanooks after the air rifle competition, 2,353-2,358.  Fehlings led the Huskers in air rifle as she scored 593 for a second-place finish.  Junior Kim Chrostowski placed third in air rifle as she posted a season-high score of 590.

Junior Kirsten Weiss tied for third in with a score of 579 as the Huskers fell to the Nanooks, 2,302-2,316, in the smallbore competition.

"We're just having too many ups and downs right now," Meili said.  "We just need to have more consistancy if we're going to be able to battle Alaska."

The Huskers return to action Nov. 10-11 at Lexington, Ky., where they will face West Virginia and Kentucky.
