Auburn, Ala. - Despite a tough day on the greens, the Nebraska women's golf team is within striking distance of the top teams after the first round of the Derby Invitational in the Auburn University Golf Club on Saturday.
The Huskers managed a 22-over-par 310 as a team over the first 18 holes to sit in ninth place in a 17-team field that features 15 squads that qualified for NCAA Regional play in 2006.
Nebraska enters Sunday's second and final round just nine strokes behind the tournament leaders from North Carolina. The Tar Heels fired a 13-over-par 301 on the afternoon. The hosts from Auburn finished just two strokes back of UNC at 303, while LSU managed a 305 and Baylor a 306.
Despite sitting in the middle of the pack in a loaded tournament field, Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl said the day could have gone much better for the Huskers.
"We had a rough day on the greens," Krapfl said. "We did not putt well on the Bermuda grass, and we left a lot of strokes out there. I guess its great that we are still within striking distance of the top teams, but at the same time it makes it even more disappointing. We put ourselves in positions to shoot lower scores but just didn't get it done on the greens. Hopefully we will have a better day tomorrow and are able to make a move."
Senior Chrissie McArdle led the Huskers on the opening day of the tournament with a three-over-par 75 on the 6,310-yard layout at the University Golf Club. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native sits in an eight-way tie for fourth place, just three strokes behind Auburn's Margaret Shirley in first place.
"Chrissie played well, which was good to see," Krapfl said. "She played good, solid golf and made some putts to help herself and our team score."
Junior Elli Brown and true freshman JC Stevenson each added five-over-par scores of 77 to join 15 other players in a tie for 22nd heading into Sunday's final 18 holes. Senior Andrea Carlson (Dunagan) contributed an 81, while Kate White managed an 82 on the day.
The Derby Invitational, which was shortened to just 36 holes after Friday's scheduled first round was canceled by rain, will conclude with 18 holes on Sunday beginning at 8:45 a.m. Live scoring of the tournament is available on GolfStat.com.
