Reimers Wins ITA Central Regional

Tulsa, Okla.?Junior Imke Reimers of the Nebraska women’s tennis team captured the ITA Central Regional Main Draw Championship Sunday, Oct. 22, in Tulsa, Okla.

The day started on the doubles court where Reimers and sophomore Maria Ring fell to Nanar Airapetian and Maryori Franco of Arkansas, 8-3, but Reimers would get a rematch with Franco on the singles court.

Reimers shot out of the gates early in the singles championship match, taking the first set, 6-1, over Franco and she never looked back.  The junior from Germany carried her momentum over to the second set where she continued to dominate the Razorback and capped off the tournament with a 6-2 second-set victory.  The win marked Reimers’ sixth straight singles win.

Assistant coach Hayden Perez said Reimers’ focus and intensity led to the junior’s win.

“Reimers came out on fire,” Perez said.  “She was very focused and kept her intensity throughout the match and dominated from start to finish.”

With the win, Reimers automatically qualifies for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by OhioState in Columbus, Ohio. The event, which is NU’s final fall tournament of the 2006, runs from Nov. 2-5.  Reimers is the first Husker to qualify for the tournament since Gitte Ostermann in 2004.
