The Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Tournament offers the first national singles and doubles titles of the 2006-07 collegiate tennis season, and is followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November with the third national event set for the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
In today's prequalifying singles play, three Huskers - Clow, Stahmer and Szatmary - advanced to the second round after dominating their opponents in the first round.
Clow played a close first set against Jonah Kane-West of Texas with at 7-5 score, but then pulled away in the second set to finish off Kane-West, 6-0. With the win, Clow advances to the second round where he faces Federico Chavarria of Oklahoma.
In this morning's first round, Stahmer faced Diego Mattar of Texas-Arlington and defeated him in two quick sets, 6-1, 6-0. Stahmer now faces James Cluskey of LSU in the second round round of play.
Szatmary also came away with a victory in the first round, as he defeated James Low of Butler in two sets, 6-1, 6-2. This afternoon Stahmer is set to face Luis Diaz Barriga of Texas to battle his way into the third round of competition.
Although Navarro lost his first-round match to Marquette's Trenton Hagan, he made Hagan earn the win, forcing the match into three sets. Navarro won the first set 6-4, but failed to keep the momentum rolling as he lost the second and third sets, 2-6, 0-6.
Tate also battled his way through the first round, taking two sets to tiebreakers against Anders Dalskov of UC Santa Barbara. Winning the first set 6-2, Tate grinded through sets two and three but ultimately Dalskov came away with the win, 6-7(4), 6-7(3).
