Lawrence, Kan. ? Seniors Ty Capps (73-72-73) and Brady Schnell (71-77-70) finished with a two-over par 218 in three rounds for a seventh-place tie to lead the Nebraska men's golf team to a second-place tie in the Kansas Invitational at the par-72, 7,092-yard Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kansas.
The Huskers shot four individual rounds at or under par as a team to finish with a total score of 882 (295-294-293), tying with IowaState (293-291-298) for their best finish of the fall season thus far. As a team, Nebraska was fourth in the 16-team field in birdies with 39 and third in par-four scoring at just 35-over par, or an average of 4.23. the squad was also fourth in pars with 158 and third in par-five scoring at 18-under par, or an average of 4.70.
Capps was one of just 15 individuals to snag an eagle at the tournament, and finished first in par-four scoring at one-under par. Capps additionally finished the back nine of the final round on Tuesday with shots of three on six holes in a row in what Head Coach Bill Spangler saw as the turning point for the team to move up two spots after Monday's finish at fourth place.
"(Ty) Capps made six consecutive threes on the back nine," Spangler said, "and it was really because of him that we moved up and finished second today. He just had an extraordinary finish today.”
Schnell tied for third in the tournament with on-par shots with 36 and was seven-under par in par-five scoring for an average of 4.42.
Senior Drew Reynolds was just behind the first senior due with a 220 (73-73-74), leading him to a tie for 14th. Reynolds tied for second in the tournament in par-five scoring, finishing eight-under par for an average of 4.33. Reynolds also tied for fifth in the tournament on par-scoring with 11.
Senior Ryan Lenahan shot a 232 (78-72-82) to place him in a tie for 48th and round out the Husker’s scoring lineup. Nebraska’s four seniors have led the squad in scoring in the first two tournaments of the fall, marking the depth the team has developed in Spangler’s sixth year.
"I thought the seniors played a really solid tournament," Spangler said. "The (crew) from Kansas was saying this is the hardest they've seen the course be played ever in this tournament. I felt like they fought really hard and grinded it out today."
Sophomore Trent Price saw his first fall competition and finished with a 233 (79-78-76), tying for 55th. Price was also one of just 15 individuals to snag an eagle in the tournament.
Tournament host Kansas snagged first place with a team total of 862 (287-287-288). The University of Houston came in fourth with a total of 887 (294-294-299), while IllinoisStateUniversity rounded out the top five with a total of 894 (306-305-283).
The Huskers will next be in action when they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to play in the Memphis Intercollegiate Golf Classic on Oct. 2-3.
