Reimers Leads Huskers

Minneapolis - The Nebraska women's tennis team opened fall play Friday with several members competing in the first day the Gopher Invitational. Six Huskers participated in three singles brackets and two doubles brackets.

In the Maroon Singles Flight Bracket, junior Imke Reimers defeated Missouri’s Amanda Pratzel in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.  Reimers' success followed her into the second round where she defeated Boston University's Yana Sadovskaya, 6-1, 6-1.

Also in the Maroon Singles Flight Bracket for Nebraska were two freshmen, Diana Kuhl and Wiveca Swarting.  Kuhl lost in the first round to No. 1 seed, Milia Veselinovic, of Iowa, 0-6, 1-6, and was unable to continue play in the second round due to injury.  Although Swarting battled closely with Iowa's Hillary Mintz in the first round, in the end she was defeated in two sets, 4-6, 4-6.

In the first round of the Gold Singles Flight Bracket, sophomore Maria Ring dominated her opponent, defeating Missouri's Charlotte Bellis in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, before falling in the second round to Cori Lefkowitz of Boston University, 2-6, 2-6.  Sophomore Marianne Cicmanec was defeated in the first round by Chrissy Svetlic of Missouri in two sets, 2-6, 5-7.  Competing against Minnesota's Karina Chiarelli in the second round, Cicmanec again fell in two straight sets, 2-6, 1-6.

Sophomore Ashley Finnegan is the lone Nebraska competitor in the Minnesota Singles Flight Bracket. Finnegan fell in both the first and second rounds.  Finnegan put up a battle in the first round, but was defeated by Minnesota's Mikayla Rogers in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 5-10.  In the second round Finnegan lost to Missouri's Kaitlin McKenzie in two sets, 4-6, 4-6.

Swarting and Kuhl teamed up in the North Doubles Flight, along with Reimers and Ring.  Both pairs lost 9-7 in the first round to Wichita State and Iowa, respectively.

Cicmanec and Finnegan were victorious in round one of the Star Doubles Flight where they dominated in an 8-0 win over Air Force.

Nebraska assistant coach Hayden Perez was pleased with the way the Huskers performed.

“This was a great first day for us,” Perez said.  “This was the first opportunity to really see them play and we competed really hard.”

The Huskers continue play at the Gopher Invitational on Saturday.
