Toledo, Ohio - Senior Brady Schnell’s total score of 225 (80-70-75) led the Nebraska men’s golf team to a 10th-place finish at the sixth-annual Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational Tuesday at the par-71, 7,255-yard Inverness Club.
Head Coach Bill Spangler was impressed with the team’s place in the competitive field, which included two teams that finished in the top 10 of the 2006 NCAA Championships ? national runner-up Florida and sixth-place Georgia ? as well as three more teams that finished in the top 20 of last year’s NCAA Championships field ? Texas A&M (14th), Coastal Carolina (16th) and UNLV (19th).
“They battled pretty hard, and with a top-flight field we did ok, so I’m proud of them,” Spangler said.
The team’s final total score of 924 (311-305-308) was just two strokes from finishing in the top half of the 15-team field.
Schnell began with an 80 in the first round and fired a one-under par 70 in the second round, giving him a score of 150 through the first day to put him in a tie for 10th place individually. Schnell finished his final round with a 75 to propel him to finish in 9th place individually.
Schnell also tied for third in the tournament in par-five scoring, finishing at two-under par overall, and also tied for third in birdies with a total of nine. Schnell felt the team’s performance was good considering the weather conditions the first day as well as the competitive field.
“It was windy the whole first day and it was raining (Tuesday), and we still beat some really good teams," Schnell said. “We missed beating some good teams but just by a few strokes, but overall we’re really happy with the finish in this kind of field.”
Senior Drew Reynolds finished with a 233 (75-79-79) to fill the second spot in the Husker lineup, placing in a tie for 41st. Senior Ty Capps was just one stroke behind Reynolds with a 234 (75-81-78) to tie for 43rd.
Senior Ryan Lenahan tied for 52nd, finishing strong in his final two rounds for a total of 236 (85-75-76) to round out the Husker scoring lineup. Lenahan also tied for fifth among individuals in the tournament with six birdies, while Lenahan and Reynolds also tied for third among individuals in the tournament in par-five scoring, finishing two-under par overall.
Freshman Jamie Marshall fired a 245 (81-85-79) in his collegiate debut on a tough course, placing in a tie for 69th.
The Huskers travel to Lawrence, Kansas for the Kansas Invitational, their second of five fall tournaments, on Sept. 18-19.
