Nebraska rifle head coach Launi Meili announced Tuesday the signing of two junior competitors to the 2006-07 Husker roster.
The talented new duo includes Amanda Jeffries of Norman, Okla., and Christine Costello of Queens Creek, Ariz.
“Both Amanda and Christine have a lot of potential not only for Nebraska, but for the U.S. National team,” Meili said. “We’re happy they chose Nebraska and excited to see how they help the team.”
Jeffries claimed the 2005 Junior Olympic air rifle championship and finished eighth in smallbore and fourth in junior smallbore at the 2005 National Championships. She is currently ranked 15th nationally in the three-position smallbore by USA Shooting, and competes as a member of the United States National Development Team alongside current NU shooters Kim Chrostowski, Kristina Fehlings and Kirsten Weiss.
Costello recently finished sixth overall at the 2006 NRA Junior International Air Rifle Championships and is currently ranked 17th in three-position smallbore and 25th in air rifle by USA Shooting. Costello also holds the U.S. junior record in the J2 smallbore division with a score of 563, which she shot at the 2005 Arizona State Junior Olympics.
Additionally, both shooters have boasted outstanding work academically with each showcasing a 4.0 grade-point average and Jeffries also claiming membership in the National Technical Honor Society.
Jeffries and Costello join the team after the loss of four-time NRA All-American Misty Chanek and 2005 NCAA air rifle runner-up Andrea Franz?n.
