Five Huskers Named Academic All-Big 12; Huskers Stay Steady in National Polls

Lincoln, Neb.?The Nebraska women’s tennis team had five members named to the academic All-Big 12 team the league office announced Tuesday, April 25.  Four Huskers earned first-team honors, including seniors Jennifer Cremieux, Milena Schulz-Gartner and Ewelina Skaza and sophomore Imke Reimers.  Senior Pamela Castillejos was named to the second team.

“It’s a testament to how well our players perform on and off of the court,” coach Scott Jacobson said.  “I think it shows a good balance of athletics and academics.”

It is the third consecutive year Castillejos was named to the second team and the second straight season for Schulz-Gartner on the first team.  Cremieux was also named to the first team in 2004.

It was Reimers’ first selection to the academic All-Big 12 team.  She was one of three players to post a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade point average, and second-team honorees are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

Also Tuesday, updated ITA National Rankings were released.  The Huskers remained No. 41 after going 1-1 last weekend, including a 7-0 defeat of Iowa State, who the Big Red faces Iowa State on Thursday, April 27, in the first round of the Big 12 Championships.

Last season, every team ranked No. 47 and higher received bids to the NCAA Tournament, which bodes well for NU.

Freshman Kim Hartmann rose seven spots in the new rankings to No. 94.  Hartmann is NU’s No. 1 singles player and has posted 20 singles wins and 16 doubles victories.  Reimers also made it back into the national rankings after a four-week absence.  The sophomore from Germany is No. 114 and owns a team-high 23 singles victories.

The No. 5 seed Huskers hit the courts on Thursday, April 27, at 3 p.m., when they face the No. 12 seed IowaState, in Waco, Texas.
