Corvallis, Ore. - The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team powered its way to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships Friday night, scoring a 196.175 at OregonStateUniversity’s Gill Coliseum. The Huskers, who scored a 49.0 or better on vault and floor, finished with a record of 27-10-1 on the season and improved upon 2005’s sixth-place finish at the NCAA Super Six Finals.
No. 1 Georgia (197.75), who finished the year with a perfect 36-0 record, won its second straight NCAA team championship. Utah followed behind with a 196.80, as well as Alabama (196.725), Florida (196.275), Nebraska and IowaState (194.725).
“I’m pleased with how far they’ve come this year,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “We got tremendous experience from this championship, and our team should know how close it was to doing exceptional things here tonight. I hope that knowledge will carry them through the off-season because we are more than excited about the potential for next year with no seniors leaving our team this year.”
Although no individual event winners were crowned in the team championship, sophomore Emily Parsons finished fifth in the all-around with a 39.45. Freshman Kylie Stone had a career night to cap her freshman campaign, scoring a season-high 39.40 to finish eighth. Parsons and Stone tied for third on floor exercise (9.925), while Parsons also tied for second on vault (9.925).
“Kylie had the best performance of her career on bars, floor and the all-around tonight and had solid scores on her other two events,” Kendig said. “We haven’t even scratched the surface of what she’s capable of, and she will create a tremendous one-two punch with Emily Parsons next year.”
NU opened the competition on beam, where Parsons and freshman Tricia Woo ? who was named a second-team All-American on the event on Thursday ? led the way with matching scores of 9.85 to finish sixth. Stone added a strong 9.80 of her own for 17th, while junior Stephanie Carter recorded a 25th-place 9.75. Junior Michele Zabawa scored a 9.70 and sophomore Desire’ Sniatynski earned a 9.65, bringing the Huskers to a 48.95 finish on the event and third-place standing heading into the second rotation.
Following a bye, Nebraska moved on to floor, where Parsons and Stone provided the tandem NU needed, as each scored a 9.925 for third while establishing a new career high for Stone. Carter, a second-team All-American on floor, and Woo ? who will compete in tomorrow night’s individual floor finals as a first-team honoree, matched scores of 9.85 to finish 12th, while Sniatynski followed up with a 9.75 performance. Sophomore Brittney Williams notched a 9.675, helping the Huskers to finish with an event total of 49.30, a running score of 98.25 and fourth-place standing behind Alabama (98.775), Georgia (98.675) and Utah (98.275) at the halfway point.
NU then continued to vault and were again led by Parsons, whose stellar 9.95 for second tied her with Alabama’s three-time NCAA champion Ashley Miles. Stone finished 16th (9.825), and Carter’s 9.80 earned her 19th place. Zabawa followed with a 9.75, while Williams and freshman Sabrina Long added scores of 9.725 and 9.70, respectively. The Huskers finished the event with a 49.30 and headed into the fifth rotation with a running score of 147.30.
Nebraska capped the evening on bars, where Sniatynski ? a two-time second-team All-American on the event ? and Stone were NU’s event leaders with a 9.85 each for eighth. Redshirt freshman and first-team All-American Vanessa Meloche followed with a mark of 9.80 to finish 19th, while Parsons contributed a score of 9.725 and Williams added to the mix with a 9.65. Nebraska closed with an event score of 48.875 and a fifth-place overall NCAA finish.
“We are very pleased with the team’s performance here at nationals,” Kendig said. “They exceeded a lot of people’s expectations, and we know we don’t need a trophy to know we’ve accomplished great things this year and come a long way from the beginning of our season. Now we’re just looking forward to enjoying event finals tomorrow night and getting back home to start working for a big start to 2007.”
Nebraska will have three Huskers competing in Saturday night’s individual event finals, as Parsons will shoot for the vault and floor crowns, Woo will contend on floor and Meloche will compete for the bars title. Parsons, who finished third in floor finals as a freshman, was given the No. 5 spot in the first flight on vault and the No. 6 spot in the second flight on floor in the individual rotation draw. Woo will compete in the No. 2 spot in the second flight on floor, while Meloche will work from the No. 1 spot in the second bars flight. Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. (CST) at OSU’s Gill Coliseum.
