Baker Second, Martin 10th in Tucson

Nebraska track and field athletes completed their first outdoor multi-event competitions of the season Friday during day two of the Jim Click Combined Events in Tucson, Ariz.

 

Sara Jane Baker recorded a personal-best score of 5,485 to place second in the women’s heptathlon. Baker, who previously owned a career-high point total of 5,469, finished behind ArizonaState’s Jacqueline Johnson, who won the NCAA heptathlon title in 2004. Kim Shubert also set a personal best after totaling a seventh-place total of 4,723 points.

 

Lee Martin led a contingent of three Huskers in the men’s decathlon by finishing third in Group 1, and 10th overall, with 6,528 points. Skyler Reising, who earned fifth place in Group 1 (12th overall), shattered his previous career-best total of 6,030 with his score of 6,293. Pat Burke finished seventh in the same group (15th overall) while competing in his first-ever decathlon with a score of 6,256.

 

Nebraska returns to the road next weekend, as several more members of the men’s and women’s squads open the 2006 outdoor season at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif.
