Huskers Finish First Day at HEB, 1-1

Corpus Christi, Texas - The No. 50 Nebraska men's tennis team finished the first day of the HEB Tournament 1-1, beating Texas-San Antonio, 4-0, and losing to third-seeded Middle Tennessee State, 4-0, Thursday, in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The Huskers (8-3) continued their success in doubles play, sweeping UTSA, with wins from senior Jerry Posch and sophomore Mark Tate over Andre Moreira and Hetori Chaves, 9-7.  Juniors James Clow and Arturo Navarro defeated Joe Michael Olfindo and Shaun Michael Stewart, 8-4, to secure the doubles point for the Huskers.

In singles play, Clow defeated Adam Becker, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 3, while Tate extended his singles win-streak to eight consecutive matches with a win over Olfindo, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 4.  At No. 6, freshman Renato Melo sealed the win for NU by defeating Stewart, 6-4, 6-3.

The Huskers advanced to play No. 37 Middle Tennesse State, but fell to the Blue Raiders, 4-0.

MTSU took the doubles point by winning two matches.  Tate and Posch fell to Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom, 8-4, while junior Adrian Szatmary and senior Joerg Barthel lost to Brandon Allan and Kai Schledorn, 8-3.  Clow and Navarro defeated Greg Pollack and Morgan Richard, 8-5.

The Blue Raiders swept NU in singles with Arturo Navarro losing to Born, 7-6, 6-2, at the No. 2 spot, and Szatmary falling to Schledorn, 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 3 spot.  Tate was handed his first loss of the season by Richard, 6-3, 6-4.

The Huskers will play Western Michigan on Friday at 1 p.m.
