Oklahoma City - Three NU wrestlers remain in contention for All-America honors after the morning session of the second day of the 2006 NCAA Championships at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. In the team race, Nebraska sits in 19th with 22.5 team points. Oklahoma State leads the way with 76 points.
Jacob Klein's bid for his second career All-America bid will continue in the consolation bracket after a 5-3 loss in the quarterfinals to Michael Patrovich of Hofstra. Klein will face Matthew Palmer of Columbia in the fourth round of the consolation bracket at 174 pounds.
At 197 pounds, B.J. Padden will have to work through the consolation bracket to earn his second career All-America honor after a 6-5 loss to Phil Davis of Penn State. Padden will face Casey Phelps of Boise State in the consolation bracket. The wrestlers have split the two matches between them this year, with both going into overtime.
Paul Donahoe falls to the consolation bracket after a 5-0 loss to Oklahoma's Sam Hazewinkel in the quarterfinals at 125 pounds. Donahoe will face Coleman Scott of Oklahoma State in the third round of consolation action tonight. Scott has won all four previous meetings between the two wrestlers this season.
At 184 pounds, Vince Jones was defeated in the consolation bracket by Iowa's Paul Bradley, 10-3. Earlier in the day, Jones picked up Nebraska's only win of the session with a 9-6 victory over Ron Howard of Cleveland State. Jones ends his first season at Nebraska with a 22-13 record.
Patrick Aleksanyan fell in the consolation bracket after a 14-7 loss to Scott Jorgensen of Boise State. In his first year as Nebraska's starter at 133 pounds, Aleksanyan finishes with a 17-16 record after a 1-2 performance in his first trip to nationals.
Robert Sanders also saw his season end in the morning session after a 5-2 loss to Trevor Chinn of Lehigh. Sanders ends his first trip to the NCAA Championship with a 1-2 mark, running his season record to 13-13.
Action resumes at 6 p.m. tonight at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City with semifinal action in the championship bracket along with consolation bracket matches.
