Bryan, Texas - Elli Brown produced an opening-round 78, as the Nebraska women's golf team finished the first round of the Texas A&M Mo-morial in 15th place on Friday at the Traditions Golf Club.
Brown, a sophomore from Meridian, Idaho, finished at six-over-par on the 6,307-yard, par-72 layout to close the opening day of three-round event in a 10-way tie for 13th. Unfortunately for Nebraska, Brown was the only Husker to break 80 and sit among the top 40 golfers after the first 18 holes of the tournament.
Senior Stephanie Ruiz, who earlier this week was chosen as the Big 12 Golfer of the Month for February, managed an opening-round 81 in a tie for 41st heading into Saturday's second round.
Junior Chrissie McArdle added an 85 to close the first round in a tie for 64th, while Jackie Beste and Sara Sackett each finished at 86 to sit in a tie for 70th among the 96 individuals in the 54-hole event.
The Huskers closed the opening round in 15th place at 330, 24 strokes behind the leaders and hosts from Texas A&M (306). Arkansas trails the Aggies by just one stroke at 307, while Oklahoma is in third place after producing a 315 in the first round. Overall, eight Big 12 Conference teams are scattered throughout the 18-team tournament field, including Kansas (321), Baylor (325), Missouri (325), Kansas State (326) and Iowa State (335).
The three-day tournament continues Saturday with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m. It will conclude with the final round on Sunday.
