No. 10 Huskers Slip to No. 5 ISU

Lincoln - The No. 10 Nebraska women's gymnastics team posted a solid 196.125 but still suffered its first regular-season loss at the Bob Devaney Sports Center since the 1993 Masters Classic, falling to No. 5 Iowa State (196.25) on Sunday afternoon.

The Huskers, who dropped to 11-5-1 on the season, had not lost a meet in their home arena in 14 seasons, with the exception of ties with IowaState in 2004 and Michigan earlier this year.

Nebraska swept the individual event titles, as sophomore Emily Parsons captured first-place finishes on vault (9.90), balance beam (9.925) and floor exercise (9.90) en route to her fifth all-around crown of the season. Sophomore Desire’ Sniatynski also finished with top honors on the uneven bars, posting a 9.875 for her first bars title of the season.

“I think the star of the day was Desire’,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “She won bars and finished fourth on floor and sixth on beam. She came out and competed really well on all three events. We’re so proud of her performance today.

“Emily was back to anchoring events today like she’s capable of doing. That was a huge improvement to see. There’s no question in my mind that this was the toughest meet going on in our conference today, and certainly the loss was tough for us to take, but it will only make us a better team for the coming weeks.”

NU began the competition on vault, where Parsons set the pace with a score of 9.90 to earn her sixth vault title of the year and her first individual crown of the day. Freshman Kylie Stone scored a 9.825 for third place, bettering her career best of 9.80 set twice earlier this season, while freshman Sabrina Long and junior Michele Zabawa tied for seventh (9.80). Junior Stephanie Carter and freshman Tricia Woo added a pair of 9.775s to finish in ninth place, and Nebraska left the first rotation with a team score of 49.10 to take an early lead over IowaState (48.80).

The Huskers then moved on to the uneven bars and were led by Sniatynski’s 9.875, which gave the All-American her first bars title of the year. Meloche earned a 9.85 to take home second-place honors, while Zabawa, who is also a returning All-American on bars, scored a 9.825 to finish fourth. Stone added a 9.725 to place seventh, and sophomore Brittney Williams notched a 9.70 for eighth. Parsons put up a score of 9.65 to bring the team to an event score of 48.975, and NU continued its lead over ISU, 98.075-97.90, at the halfway point.

Nebraska moved on to the balance beam for its third event of the meet, where Parsons led the team with a 9.925, tying her career best for the third time this season and taking the individual event title. Woo followed with a score of 9.85 for fourth, and Sniatynski and Zabawa posted matching scores of 9.80 to finish sixth. Carter added a mark of 9.725 to place 10th, and Stone contributed a 9.175, bringing the Huskers to an event score of 49.10. NU went into the fourth rotation with a close lead over the Cyclones, 147.175-147.10.

The Huskers capped the afternoon on floor exercise, where Parsons’ solid 9.90 earned her the seventh floor title of 2006. Sniatynski finished fourth on the event (9.825), and Stone followed in ninth place with a score of 9.775. Williams and Carter landed in a tie for 10th (9.725), and Woo posted a mark of 9.70 for 12th, helping Nebraska put together a team score of 48.95.

“I felt like we had a pretty good meet today,” Kendig said. “It’s disappointing to see a streak end, but our team’s performance made it feel not as bad as it could have been. We competed well today, and we’re where we need to be this time of year. Our athletes are stronger and healthier, and our best gymnastics is still out in front of us. We’re excited to go make it happen.”

The Huskers will travel to Anchorage, Alaska, this Saturday, March 11, facing Alaska-Anchorage and Seattle Pacific at UAA’s Wells Fargo Sports Complex. Competition is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. (CST).
