Meili, Chanek Recognized by GARC

<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Oxford, Miss. ? Nebraska rifle head coach Launi Meili and senior Misty Chanek were individually honored by the Great America Rifle Conference at the annual awards banquet Friday night, held at the PatriciaC.LamarNationalGuardReadinessCenter in Oxford, Miss.  <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>

The GARC named Meili its 2006 Coach of the Year, while Chanek was recognized as this season’s Senior of the Year.  The Huskers, who are in just their second season as part of the GARC, were also named the regular-season champions.

In her fourth season with the Huskers Meili has coached Nebraska to an undefeated regular season with impressive wins over national powers Army and Kentucky.  This weekend, Meili hopes to continue that success in Oxford as NU defends the GARC Championship title it earned in 2005.

The lone senior on the Nebraska roster, Chanek has led the Huskers throughout 2006, averaging a score of 586 in both disciplines as well as career-highs of 591 in each.  At the GARC Championships, Chanek will strive not only for back-to-back GARC titles, but also for an individual title in either smallbore or air rifle.

Other individual awards were given to Army’s Chris Abalo as the 2006 Shooter of the Year and to Kentucky’s Jason Dardas who was named the Rookie of the Year.

All-conference teams were also announced at the banquet, with junior Kristina Fehlings, the 2005 GARC Shooter of the Year, earning first-team honors in both smallbore, air rifle and combined.  Chanek joined Fehlings with first-team honors in smallbore and combined, and also was named to the second-team in air rifle.  Sophomore Andrea Franz?n earned first-team air rifle honors, as well as being named to the second-team in combined.  Sophomore Kirsten Weiss earned second-team honors in smallbore.

The GARC Championships begin today at the PatriciaC.LamarNationalGuardReadinessCenter with the smallbore event and run through Sunday afternoon.
