Lincoln, Neb. - The No. 62 Nebraska men's tennis team claimed its first victory at the new Nebraska Tennis Center, Friday night, defeating Drake, 4-3.
The Huskers (4-2) beat Drake (6-2) for the second time this season, ending the Bulldogs' six-match winning streak. The first time the Huskers beat Drake, they downed the Bulldogs 4-2 in the semifinal round of the ITA Region V National Indoor Qualifying tournament.
The Huskers went up 1-0, claiming the doubles point with a win from junior Adrian Szatmary and senior Joerg Barthel over Drake's Jonathan Tishler and Chris Lueth, 8-1, in the No. 2 spot. Juniors James Clow and Arturo Navarro sealed the double point with a win over Sergi Vila and Ivan Mendoza, 8-4.
Although the Huskers struggled in the first three slots of the singles lineup, Clow beat Tishler, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot to get the Huskers going. Sophomore Mark Tate remains undefeated, claiming a victory over Lueth, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 5 spot.
Freshmen Renato Melo and Mendoza were left to decide the match after Melo won the first set over Mendoza, 7-6(4) and despite falling behind 5-4, Melo fought back to tie it before fighting Mendoza off, 7-5 in the second set to give Nebraska the win.
"We knew it was going to be a tough match tonight," Coach Kerry McDermott said. "We expected it to be a battle and we knew the doubles point was going to be key, and they were. Drake played really well, but we were able to pull it out in the end and that's always good for a coach to see."
The Huskers return to action at the Nebraska Tennis Center on Sunday to take on Air Force at 1 p.m.
