No. 12 Huskers Knock Off No. 10 Missouri

LincolnSophomore Emily Parsons, won three individual event titles and the all-around crown to lead the No. 12 Nebraska women’s gymnastics team to a season-high 196.35 on its way to a victory over No. 10 Missouri (195.95) Sunday afternoon in front of 1,543 fans at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Huskers, who improved to 5-2-1 on the season, scored 49.0 or better on the uneven bars and floor exercise in a strong effort from start to finish. The victory also stretched Nebraska’s home unbeaten streak at the DevaneyCenter to 59 meets, as the Huskers have won every regular-season competition in their home arena since the 1993 Masters Classic, except for a pair of ties with IowaState in 2004 and Michigan earlier this season.

“Emily continues to amaze people every week,” Nebraska Coach Dan Kendig said. “She has a great vault and great tumbling on floor, and solid beam and bars routines. She performs consistently and prepares well, which results in nothing but confidence and success. That’s exactly what it’s been for her this year.

The Huskers swept the individual event titles, as Parsons claimed top honors in the all-around (39.375), vault (9.90), beam (9.875) and floor (9.90). The vault crown was the St. Charles, Mo., native’s fourth consecutive title on vault in 2006. Redshirt freshman Vanessa Meloche complete the sweep by winning the uneven bars title with a career-high 9.925.

“It was great having Vanessa back on bars to anchor that lineup,” Kendig continued. “She’s worked hard, and I know sitting out was hard on her last week. She and Stephanie Carter are two we’re taking in a day-to-day sense. Stephanie really had a strong floor routine to finish today when we needed her.”

Sophomore Desire’ Sniatynski added a third-place finish in the all-around with a 39.175, while junior Michele Zabawa , who made her first appearance in the all-around competition since the 2004 NCAA Championships, finished fourth with a solid 39.05.

NU began the competition on vault, where Parsons set the pace with a score of 9.90 to win the title. Carter and Zabawa each posted a 9.80 to tie for second, and freshman Tricia Woo followed in fifth place (9.75). Freshman Sabrina Long added a 9.725 to place ninth, and Sniatynski notched a score of 9.675. Freshman Kylie Stone also competed in exhibition, scoring a 9.70. Nebraska finished the event with a 48.975, narrowly trailing Missouri after the first rotation, as the Tigers opened with a 49.125 on the uneven bars.

The Huskers responded with a season-high 49.375 on the uneven bars, led by Meloche's career-best 9.925 to tie Missouri’s Jodie Heinicka for the event title. Zabawa and Sniatynski each scored a 9.90 to tie for third, while sophomore Brittney Williams added a 9.85 for fourth. Stone improved her season high on the event with a 9.80, and Parsons posted a 9.70 for 10th, pulling NU ahead of the Tigers, 98.35-97.85, at the halfway point.

Nebraska moved on to the balance beam for its third event of the dual, and Parsons led the team with a 9.875 to win another title. Zabawa added a season-best 9.80 to finish fifth, while Sniatynski, Woo and Stone landed in a three-way tie for eighth place (9.75). The Huskers finished the event with a season-high 48.925 to increase their margin over MU to 147.275-146.80, entering the final rotation.

The Huskers capped the afternoon on floor exercise, where Parsons turned in a stellar performance, putting up a score of 9.90 to earn her third event title of the competition. Carter took home runner-up honors by equaling her career best (9.875), and Sniatynski followed in third place with a score of 9.85. Long’s 9.75 performance left her in seventh, while Woo posted a 9.70 for her efforts. Zabawa finished with a 9.55, and NU earned a 49.075 to seal the win.

“I think last week was more of a turning point for this season than today’s meet,” Kendig said. “When you have a little trouble like we did at Utah, it forces you to come in and work harder in the gym. It was good to see all that practice pay off against a very good Missouri team today. Now we need to continue with that effort in the coming weeks at Oklahoma, PennState and IowaState.”

The Huskers will travel to Norman, Okla., to take on No. 8 Oklahoma next Saturday, Feb. 4, at the LloydNobleCenter. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
