Huskers Hold Successful Intrasquad Meet

Lincoln ? The Nebraska women’s gymnastics team held its intrasquad meet Friday night at Mabel Lee Hall, scoring a 192.00 in its annual pre-season competition.

 

NU performed on all four events, beginning with vault, where freshman Sabrina long led off for the Huskers with a 9.65. Sophomore Desire’ Sniatynski followed with a 9.70, and All-American junior Michele Zabawa posted a 9.80 to give the team momentum. Sophomore Stephanie Carter added a 9.725, while freshman Tricia Woo gave a 9.80 effort. Nebraska’s four-time All-American sophomore, Emily Parsons, gave a strong finish in the sixth position, scoring a 9.85 to give the team a 48.875 on the event.

 

In the second rotation on the uneven bars, Parsons resumed her role as lead-off competitor with a 9.425, and Carter put up a 9.50. Williams, who was one of the Huskers’ most consistent performers on bars as a freshman, came through with a 9.675, and Zabawa, the defending Big 12 conference bars champion, added a 9.70 for the highest score on the event. Redshirt freshman Vanessa Meloche posted a 9.125 in her first performance as a Husker, and All-American sophomore Desire’ Sniatynski scored a 9.725 to finish. Nebraska finished bars with a 48.025.

 

NU then moved on to the balance beam to find a start with Zabawa, who earned an 8.875. Carter came up with a 9.00, and Long’s routine garnered a 9.225. Sniatynski then gave a 9.15 showing, and Woo, showcasing one of the Huskers’ most unique beam routines, finished with a 9.625. Parsons was the final competitor on the event, posting a 9.725 to bring the team’s event score to a 46.725.

 

The Huskers capped the evening on floor exercise, and Long set the pace with a 9.60. Zabawa added a 9.55, while Sniatynski notched a 9.625. Carter scored a 9.70, and Woo (9.05) and Parsons gave the final two floor performances of the night. Parsons, who was a first-team All-America honoree on floor as a freshman, picked up where she left off in the 2005 season, posting a stellar 9.825.

 

All-around competitors included Parsons (38.825), Sniatynski (39.20), Carter (37.925) and Zabawa (37.875). Williams competed as an additional performer on vault (9.65) and beam (9.575), while on bars, Meloche added an 8.95 and freshman Alise Cecchini posted an 8.675.

 

“I was pleased with our start tonight,” Head Coach Dan Kendig said. “We have a lot of work to do, but our team now know where they need to focus. I’m encouraged with the potential of our team and the preparations we will take on in the coming weeks for our first meet in January.”

 

Nebraska opens its season on at the Super Six Challenge in Baton Rouge, La., on Jan. 6. The meet, which is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m., will feature the Huskers with LSU and Alabama, along with Auburn, Missouri and Iowa State.
