Huskers Finish Sixth at Minnesota Invite

Minneapolis, Minn. ? The Nebraska swimming and diving team used eight top-eight performances to maintain its sixth-place position and finish the Minnesota Invitational on a high note Sunday.

Nebraska scored a three-day total of 479, trailing only Notre Dame, Minnesota, Kansas, Wisconsin and Washington State. Big 12 foe Iowa State was seventh with 129 points.

Minnesota native Becky Johnson performed very well in her home state for the second straight day, as she took runner-up honors on the platform dive with a score of 222.40 after also finishing second yesterday on the one-meter.

Junior Lauren Bailey set her second NCAA provisional cut of the season in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 16:34.43 to place third. She was followed by another NCAA provisional cut and career-best performance from junior co-captain Kate Wheeler, who placed fourth in 16:39.57. Wheeler was also eighth in the 100-yard freestyle (53.65).

The Huskers got a second fourth-place finish from junior Bailey Ingles, who swam a season-best time of 2:05.61 in the 200-yard butterfly. The Omaha, Neb. native moved up three spots after finishing seventh in the preliminaries.

Sophomore Adrienne Goodman also qualified for the finals of the 200-yard breaststroke to place seventh in a season-best time of 2:24.44, while senior Rachel Schlatter placed second in the consolation finals (10th overall) also in a season-best time (2:23.84).

The Husker swimmers will now take a break from action as the divers only will compete at the Texas Invitational Dec. 1-3 in Austin, Texas.
