Reimers, Skaza Advance to Quarterfinals

Sophomore Imke Reimers and senior Ewelina Skaza remained in the running for the Main Draw Doubles title with two victories on Friday to advance to the final eight at the ITA Central Regionals in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Reimers and Skaza defeated Kansas’ No. 2 team of Elizabeth Ardeeva and Ksenia Bukina 8-4 after downing Erika Josbena and Yelena Olshanskaya of Missouri 8-4 earlier in the day to advance to tomorrow’s match with Maryori Franco and Karina Ledaja of Arkansas.

"Reimers and Skaza played tremendous in doubles for us last year," Nebraska Head Coach Scott Jacobson said. "They play a really good Arkansas team in the quarterfinals, but our goal is to still try and win the tournament."

Freshmen Vanessa Heute and Kim Hartmann came up with another pair of wins in the Singles Main Draw to advance to the prestigious field of 16, before they suffered a defeat.

Heute defeated Ksenia Bukina 6-4, 6-4, while Hartmann downed Emily Kwok 6-2, 6-3 to qualify for the round of 16 before they each fell in their next matches.

"Anytime you get to the round of 16 in a major regional tournament like this in your first year of collegiate competition, you are doing some great things," Jacobson said. "We are real proud of Vanessa and Kim’s leadership. We knew that they were two very talented freshmen and they have both played very well."

The Huskers will continue play in the tournament on Saturday, Oct. 22.
