Heute Advances in Day One of ITA Central Regionals

Salt Lake City, Utah?Three members of the Nebraska women’s tennis team competed Wednesday, Oct. 19, in the ITA Central Regionals Qualifying Tournament in Salt Lake City.  Freshman Vanessa Heute advanced to the round of 16.

 

In the first round of the qualifying tournament, senior Ewelina Skaza bounced back after a first set loss, 6-1, to take the second set, 6-4.  She lost in a match tiebreaker to Rachael Sakmaster of Denver in the tiebreaker, 10-6.  Senior Milena Schulz-Gartner fell to WichitaState’s Torrie Browning, 6-1, 6-3, while freshman Vanessa Heute started off her Husker career strongly as she defeated conference foe Brittany Brown of Kansas in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.  Senior Pamela Castillejos fell in a close match to Denver’s Annette Aksdal, 6-7, 6-3, 11-9.

 

In the second round, Heute played in an exciting match against Jana Mackova of BoiseState which came down to the wire.  In the first set, Heute dominated Mackova, 6-2, but the BoiseState freshman bounced back to take the second set, 6-4.  In the tiebreaker, Heute and Mackova exchanged blows until finally Heute defeated Mackova, 13-11.

 

Heute hits the courts Thursday when she faces Dolly Chang of BYU in the Round of 16 in the Qualifying Tournament.
