<?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Loveland, Ohio-The Nebraska men’s golf team opened its fourth tournament of the fall with a 574 (296-278) through 36 holes at the Xavier Invitational in Loveland, Ohio. The Huskers score places them in a tie for 7th place along with EasternMichiganUniversity (288-286) in a field of 19 teams after the first day of action at the par-72, 6,921-yard Oasis Golf Club. <?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
The team’s score leaves it just two strokes out of the top five. This also marks the first time the Huskers have broken into the top-10 after the first day of a tournament since they hosted the Fairway Club Invitational on Sept. 12.
Nebraska’s score of 296 through the first round left them tied with four other teams for 12th place. The Huskers sizzled in the second round, however, with a 278, enough to push them to the top half of the field and 2-under par.
The Huskers’ top four scoring athletes marked consistency on the course today, as they all finished within one shot of each other.
Senior Judd Cornell (75-68) and junior Brady Schnell (72-71) led the team with scores of 143 through 36 holes, placing them in a tie for 22nd. Cornell’s second round of 18 marked a personal season-low score of 68. Cornell’s previous low was a 69, which he snagged at the Fairway Club Invitational.
Junior Drew Reynolds finished with a 144 (75-69), placing him in a tie for 28th. His second-round score of 69 is a two-stroke improvement on his season-low score of 71, shot at the Memphis Intercollegiate Golf Classic. Junior Ryan Lenahan matched Reynolds with 144 strokes (74-70) and is tied for 28th.
Junior Ty Capps rounded out the Husker lineup with a score of 155 (78-77) and a tie for 84th. His second-round score of 77 matched his season low, which he shot at the Fairway Club Invitational.
The Huskers are right on the tails of the top five in the tournament, as Wisconsin and Indiana sit in fifth and sixth with scores of 572 (283-289) and 573 (289-284), respectively. The University of Louisville leads the tournament with 557 (281-276), while Xavier (283-278-561), AustinPeayState (276-288-564) and Marquette (284-286-570) round out the top four teams in the tournament.
The Xavier Invitational concludes on Tuesday with the final 18 holes, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. (central) shotgun start. Following the Xavier Invitational, the Huskers return to action at the Louisiana Tech Invitational in Ruston, La., on Oct. 17-18.
