Los Angeles, Calif?Three members of the Nebraska women’s tennis team competed Saturday, Oct. 1, in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. Sophomore Imke Reimers and freshman Kim Hartmann advanced to the third round of the prequalifying tournament.
In singles play, Reimers bounced back after dropping the first set to defeat Ana Olivos Cecilia of Oregon in a three-set thriller, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4). Reimers carried the momentum into the second round, where she defeated Sylvia Kosakowski, 6-3, 6-2. Kosakowski is ranked No. 111 nationally.
Hartmann began her Husker career on a strong note by posting two victories in her first collegiate matches. Hartmann defeated the No. 100 player in the nation, Illona Somers, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Hartmann continued to roll in the second round, dominating Brook Beier of Purdue, 6-0, 6-1.
Senior Milena Schulz-Gartner also made the trip but fell in the first round to Texas’s Olson Ristine, 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles play, the Huskers’s tandem of Schulz-Gartner and Reimers defeated Natalia Kostenko and Vana Mrazovic of Pacific, 8-5.
Assistant coach Hayden Perez was pleased with the effort his players showed.
“In singles, Imke Reimers was down, 5-2, in the third set and fought hard to get back for a win,” Perez said. “Kim Hartmann also fought hard to win. They both played extremely well.”
The Huskers hit the courts Sunday, Oct. 2, in the final round of the prequalifying tournament. With wins tomorrow, Hartmann and Reimers would advance to the qualifying tournament which begins on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
