Fort Collins, Colo. -Stephanie Ruiz opened her senior season on Monday with a career-best 69 in the first round and followed with a one-under par 71 in the second round to enter the final day of the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, in a tie for second place.
Ruiz's two-round total of 140 propelled the Nebraska women's golf team to sixth place in the standings among the 18 teams in the tournament field. The Edmond, Okla., enjoyed a sparkling return to the course for her senior season after sitting out the 2004-05 campaign as a redshirt.
The most experienced golfer on NU's roster, Ruiz led by example on Monday and the rest of the Huskers followed suit with solid rounds through the first 36 holes of the 2005 fall season.
Senior Jackie Beste enters the final day of the tournament in a tie for 29th place (73-77-150), while sophomoe Elli Brown managed a tie for 37th through two rounds (77-75-152). Senior Sara Sackett and junior Chrissie McArdle kept all five of Nebraska's golfers among the top 50 in the individual standings by shooting 77s in both rounds to sit in a tie for 47th place at 154 through two rounds.
Baylor owns a sizable lead over the rest of the field entering Tuesday's final round after shooting a sizzling 277 in the second round after a strong 287 in the opening round. The Lady Bears closed the day at 12-under par, 18 strokes ahead of second-place New Mexico.
The hosts from Colorado State and Fresno State enter the final round in a tie for third at 585, while Long Beach State rounds out the top five at 589, just seven strokes ahead of the Huskers.
