The Nebraska men and women’s cross country teams will open the 2005 season at the Creighton/UNO Classic at Chalco Hills Recreation Area in Omaha, Neb., this Saturday.
The women’s 5k will kick off the action at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men’s 8k at 11 a.m. The Nebraska women will toe off against Creighton, Nebraska-Omaha, Northwest Missouri State and the College of St. Mary’s. The men will be head-to-head with Creighton.
"We are looking at this meet as more of a scrimmage and getting into a low- key atmosphere," Head Coach Jay Dirksen said. "We are ready to get in a race situation and get our new runners’ feet wet."
Juniors Bryce Dickmeyer and Aaron Nasers will lead the men’s squad into this weekend. The co-captains placed second and fourth respectively at last year’s Creighton/UNO Classic, and will be backed by four talented newcomers in sophomore Peter van der Westhuizen and freshmen Brian Parr, Kyle Custer and Chris Clymer.
The women will be led by a trio of captains in seniors Michaela Lenihan and Kayte Tranel and junior Kim Pancoast. Lenihan was seventh at last year’s UNO/Creighton Classic.
