LINCOLN ? The Nebraska football team held its first practice of the fall semester Tuesday afternoon on the FieldTurf inside Memorial Stadium. The Huskers worked out for a little over two hours in half pads.
Two seniors were announced as captains following practice, as strong safety Daniel Bullocks and I-back Cory Ross were chosen by their teammates to lead the squad in 2005. Head Coach Bill Callahan was pleased with the team’s choices of Ross and Bullocks. Callahan said that the players decided to choose only two senior captains for this season, one year after the Huskers elected only one senior among four captains.
“They will do a fine job leading our team,” Callahan said. “Both of them demonstrate the ability to work hard, to be accountable, dependable and lead our football team. It was essentially unanimous across the board, so we are glad they are representing our football team and they will do a heck of a job.
“Cory is an individual who has played with a very high level with a lot of pain in the past. He has tremendous competitive ability as a player. As a player off the field, he can lead, he can enlist people for the good of the team. He is a great representative of what Husker football is all about. He is responsible, accountable and great off the field with teammates. He is a guy that you would love to follow.
“Daniel is the ultimate leader by example, in my opinion. He can lead through his work ethic and sacrifice and through his example day-in and day-out. He can push people and be an enforcer when he has to be. He has a strong personality and a deep, deep passion for Husker football. He is the kind of guy that you want backing you up. I think we have two great leaders on our football team (as captains.)”
Callahan also announced the winners of Nebraska’s “Tour de Camp” program that saw 23 different Huskers earn yellow jerseys for their practice efforts during fall training camp. The offensive award went to Ross, while Bullocks and linebacker Stewart Bradley shared the defensive honor. Brandon Rigoni and cornerback Tierre Green split the special teams honor.
“I’m really glad that our guys competed on a day-to-day basis (during fall camp),” Callahan said. “There really wasn’t any runaway winner in our tour like there was in the Tour de France, but it was good. We had a lot of fun with it, the guys competed day-in and day-out. They took a lot of pride in who wore that jersey (each day). I think it was a good way to promote practice performance and really measure yourself as a team.”
Nebraska returns to practice Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Offensive Coordinator Jay Norvell and requested players will address the media following exercises.
