Milkevics Eliminated from World Championships

HELSINKI, Finland ? The 2005 IAAF World Track and Field Championships came to an end for the final member of Nebraska’s contingent of athletes Thursday, as Dmitrijs Milkevics was unable to advance out of the qualifying stages of the men’s 800-meter run.

Milkevics, who was competing for Latvia, finished fifth in the third of six heats with a time of 1:50.44, while Russia’s Yuriy Borzakovskiy won the heat in 1:50.14. The third section had a significantly slower pace than the other five heats, as 1:47.65 was the mark recorded by the next slowest race winner. Milkevics owns a personal-best time of 1:44.74, which he set to win the NCAA outdoor title back in early June.

In all, four current and two former Huskers competed at the 2005 World Championships, including Priscilla Lopes, who bowed out of the women’s 100-meter hurdles competition Wednesday during the semifinals. Former NCAA champ Carl Myerscough was the other lone Husker to advance out of an event qualifying round, as he earned a 12th-place finish in the men’s shot put on Aug. 7.
