HELSINKI, Finland ? Former Nebraska NCAA champion Carl Myerscough finished 12th in the men’s shot put competition during the first day of the IAAF World Track and Field Championships Saturday after becoming the final athlete to qualify for the event final earlier in the day.
Myerscough, competing for Great Britain, notched a throw of 65-10 1/4 (20.07) on his second of three qualifying attempts to edge out the 13th-place competitor, Romania’s Guset Gheorghe, by less than one foot to reach the final round. The Hambleton, England, native’s final-round best mark of 64-6 1/2 (19.67) on three attempts did not earn him one of eight spots in the competition’s final three throws.
Saturday marked Myerscough’s first shot put final at a world competition. He also competed in the 2003 World Championships in Paris, France, but was unable to advance past the qualifying round. An eight-time Big 12 champion and seven-time NCAA All-American while competing for the Huskers from 2002-2004, Myerscough won four NCAA shot put titles during his career. He still holds all Nebraska school records in the shot put and discus events.
The World Track and Field Championships continue through Aug. 14 with several more Huskers scheduled to participate. Becky Breisch (U.S.) and Egle Uljas (Estonia) are next up for Nebraska, as they compete in the women’s discus and women’s 400-meter qualifying rounds Sunday in Helsinki.
